Repainting is one of the easiest ways to make an old dresser, either a non-painted dresser or painted dresser, look much fresher. There are several steps that need to be followed practically to repaint a dresser. I believe you can practice it by yourself at home and theoretically such steps are applicable to most kinds of furniture.
Step 1, prepare the area.
The very first thing that needs to deal with is the location that will be used for painting the dresser. It Is highly recommended to choose an indoor area or some area that is not fully open to minimize contact with debris, dust, and any other contaminants.
However, it needs enough ventilation to repaint a dresser because good air circulation will be beneficial to drying the new coats of paint.
Step 2, prepare the equipment.
Having prepared the place, the next step is to prepare the equipment. Well, this looks trivial but completing the equipment for this kind of project is decisive because missing only one or two items may hinder you to successfully finish the project. Minimally, you have to prepare things like foam rollers, polyurethane varnish, latex paint, wood primer, sandpapers, tape, drop cloth and rag. You also need to prepare some pieces of brushes, including the soft as well as small ones.
Step 3, begin with sanding.
The very first thing to do following equipment preparation is sanding. It is because sanding will be useful to prepare the surface before being painted. To successfully sand the surfaces of the dresser, it is better for you to prepare a couple of different types of sandpapers, i.e. coarse, smooth, and medium sandpapers. Use such sandpapers simultaneously until the surfaces feel smooth and even.
Step 4, tape where you don’t want to paint.
Some people make use of painter’s tape when they want to paint each of their dressers different colors, i.e. to renew your painted dresser. The pieces of tape that you attach on the surfaces will become not only the surfaces’ protectors from spills or drips but also the limiters that ‘tell’ where you should paint and where you should not.
Step 5, start applying the primer
The first coat to apply is primer. This becomes the base paint that will be, then, covered by the main paint.
Step 6, continue with apply the paint
The paint or the main paint is what you need to apply over the primer.
Step 7, do varnishing
To have a perfectly newly painted dresser, you cannot miss this step because this will significantly improve the visual quality of the item.
The last step is to remove all of the tapes.
Remove the pieces of tapes attached on the surfaces. Finished.
